With the development of technology, our study environment has changed a lot. Abel Sanchez witnessed the change and when his son asked,” Dad, why should I go to college?”, he was lost in thought: now we can find study recourses online and even our teachers can use computers to have a lecture, use E-mail to encourage us students to do homework and take a quiz. But we still should go to college to communicate with our classmates face to face and then develop our ability to team work, character building and so on.
And in John Ciardi’s opinion, in university students enroll for both training and education. There is not only work in our life. Entertainment and sleep are also important parts. So teacher lecturer is the instructor to lead students to look for both professional skills and penetrating ideas. We students should not only pat attention to learn skills used to make a living, but also enjoy the beauty of art, idea and culture.
The similarity between Abel Sanchez and John Ciardi is that they both think college students have the opportunity to accept skills and new ideas to seek a livelihood and broaden horizons. College education should make us a person, a real person.
For me, an undergraduate just taking a semester class, going to college means find a way to open my mind. I agree with the two men and I think, life is not only about the present, but also about poetry and distance. College education should be serious and free. Is it contradictory? No, it is not. Being serious, like punishing the one cheating in exam, makes us try to study major knowledge that has a little influence on our future job (there are many people doing job unrelated to their major in college) and then lets us realize the importance of persistence and patience. Being free, like not just focusing on textbook, makes us look for life’s joy. So humanistic education is necessary.
I still remember the scene— “Is there someone going to school for improving own moral not future job?” my middle school English teacher asked. We both kept silent. The analogous scene happened when I took our foreign language teacher’s class in NENU. “will you choose a job giving you happiness or job?” Most of us selected the job giving us money. But our teacher was sure to say, “I would like to choose the job making me happy.” It is a pity that many students are so utilitarian. I can not imagine what will happen if everyone focuses on wealth and fame. Humanistic education will have an importance on instructing us to pursuit poetry and distance.
Why are we called human? Because we have thought, not just food and sleep. People with humanistic feelings always have more emotion and will be more thoughtful. College life is precious moment of life. Most of us have been an adult, which means we should be responsible for ourselves and if college has provided the environment in which we can find our interest, especially our sole, should not we seize the chance? Of course, the premise is that our college has created such an environment. Higher education, higher skills, higher humanistic.
Do not be a zombie only having the appearance of human. Walk, run, even jump to hug poetry and distance.
Hope that we can look up at the starts while keeping our feet on the ground.
