Good evening, honorable CPC Party Chief, Mr Wang, honorable Dean of Foreign language department, Ms Bao, my respectable colleague’s, my dear students, ladies and gentlemen:
It’s a great honor for me to stand here, saying a few words on the special occasion of the opening ceremony of our English corner. It’s also a great pleasure to share my opinion of it.
Comrades and my fellow students, why do we need to hold a English corner in a Chinese college located so far away from the downtown area? Is there any mentionable value in the attempt to gather together to practice the challenging language---English, even sometimes without a single foreign soul or even anEnglish teacher’s presence? My answers for those questions are definitely affirmative. Yes, we do. We do need to participate such kind of activities very frequently, rather than occasionally, or rarely.
I’m saying this firstly because our sage Confucius has told us : “Isn’t it a pleasure to learn and then practice what you’ve learned from time to time?” (学而时习之,不亦乐乎?)As English learners, or English majors, we all need real and direct context to drill what we learn from books. An English corner will perfectly permit us to practice our imagined language in real circumstances.
For the second, communication is the key to solve everything (please allow me to be a little extreme when emphasizing the significance of it). Our Chinese culture stresses harmonious relationship between people. The quotation that“ peace is important”(和为贵) from Confucius tells us we should properly handle social relations. In accomplishing this, I think meditation or solo show won’t function. English corner, at least can be one part of communication, a genuine communication out of class among you yourself and teachers.
The last reason, which I think is the most important one is that by attending English corner, we are learning English through life. Men and women, students and teachers, are all growing up and learning to live with one another, no matter how they love and hate andquarrel and forgive and suffer and enjoy all the people need adjust themselves to the circumstances in this earthly life. When certain habits of living develop, culture is formulated. In that case, we should really be very serious about habit cultivation, shouldn’t we?
I am happy about the opening but very worried about keeping it. Afterall, young people like you have too many choices to spend your time, and too many excuses for not attending the English corner. For that, what I want to say is attending English corner is not a matter of obligations, examinations, responsibilities or burden. It’s a nice opportunity to check how deeply concerned you are about your career, esp. for English majors, and how active you are in facing your life. Undoubtedly, that can determine the quality of your present life and success of yours' tomorrow.
Any respond and feedback for my view will be warmly welcomed.
Thank you!!
