My Dear students, freshmen in Grade 2019:
Good morning, everyone! As your English teacher for the coming two years, I’m proud to welcome you to this college. Your achievement is the triumph of years of hard work, both of your own and of your parents and teachers. Here at the English class, we pledge to make your educational experience and English study as rewarding as possible.
College is a unique mix of freedom and responsibility. It’s hard to express how profound a change college represents in the lives of new students like you: new homes, new lifestyles, new people, and a wealth of new learning opportunities. Facing all of these many changes, you mustchoose responsibly and wisely.
College is a fresh start in your life. You will find your college experience more rewarding if you consider some important questions: what are your expectations? What do you hope to discover? How will you make the most of this marvelous opportunity and exciting new experience? What will you do to ensure thatthe journey you begin at university today leads you toward a bright and successful future?
To find appropriate answers for the questions mentioned above, you may do much. You may think hard by yourself; you may discuss warmly with your new friends; or you may go to the library to read some books. But what I want to tell you at thismoment is a very direct and easy thing to do. Listen to people around you. Listen to your university president, your teachers, and your parents and see what suggestions they have for you.
A father has ever made a group of poem-like lines for his college boy:
College is the time when you have: 大学时光就是当你:
the first taste of independence, 初尝独立生活的滋味
the greatest amount of free time, 拥有长长的自由的光阴
the most flexibility to change, 面对无尽改变的可能
the lowest cost for making mistakes. 以最微小的代价来犯错的几个年头。
Many elder ones like him may tell you that college years are the most valuable phase in your life time. These next four years will be a time unlike any other. Here you are surrounded by great resources: interesting students from all over the country, a learned and caring faculty, a comprehensive library, great sports facilities, and student organizations covering every possible interest---from sports to arts, to community services and so on.
The most valuable wealth in the college is a well-organized courses system you are going to spend next four years. Some are necessary theoretical introductions for your major, and others are common knowledge for a qualified and civilized citizen. For example, college English we are now having belongs to the second category.
Here in this college, it may not always be pleasant to have so many new experiences all at once. In your dorm, the student next door may repeatedly play the one song, which gives you a giant headache! You may be an early bird while your roommate is a night owl! You may feel a little sad for not able to staying with your best friends and your family members. But don’t forget your departure to college makes it undeniably clear that you are no longer a child. Don’t worry if become a little uncomfortable with some of your new experiences. I promise nearly all of them will provide you with valuable lessons which will enrich your life.
As you can be here because you have been working very hard in the past middle school moment, your bright future can’t come if youwaste your precious college time. College training provides you with knowledge as well as practical opportunities to get you fully or partially prepared for your future career in the soci ety. Don’t ever forget this---the future is built on a strong foundation of the past!
So, approach these four years enthusiastically! Make the most of your time. Become the great thinker you were born to be. Let your talents evolve to their fullest potential. Be bold! Learn and grow! Don’t forget that your parents are enormously proud that you’ve made it this far, and they can’t wait to see what you will become!
Yours
Faithfully
